Curriculum Notes Prep II Summer Term 2016

This term our topic is “Oceans and Seas”.

We have a new and exciting opportunity to become involved with Beach School at Polkerris, which we will be visiting weekly.

The topic work will involve aspects of geography, history, art, ICT, science, PSHE, maths and English.

English:

Phonics:

  • Develop phonics until independent decoding is achieved

Spellings:

  • These will be linked to our phonics lessons.

Grammar:

  • Punctuation including  question marks, exclamation marks, apostrophes (possessive and contraction), speech marks
  • Statements, questions, commands and exclamations
  • Nouns (including proper nouns), verbs, adjectives and adverbs
  • Present and past tense
  • Connectives
  • Suffixes
  • Comprehension

Fiction Writing:

  • Stories by the same author – write and illustrate own story.

Non Fiction Writing:

  • Recounting of “My News”
  • Recounting of school trips
  • Recounting of whole school activities
  • Information writing
  • Book review

Poetry:

  • Investigate poems and rhymes about birds – write a poem about a bird

Handwriting:

  • Using the diagonal and horizontal strokes needed to join letters
  • Writing capital letters and digits of the correct size, orientation and relationship to one another and to lower-case letters
  • Using spacing between words that reflects the size of the letters.

Speaking and Listening:

  • Class assembly.
  • Retelling of stories.
  • Discussions.
  • Reporting of news.
  • Participating in workshops.

Reading:

Regular reading practice through the use of:

  • Reading schemes
  • Library books
  • Topic books
  • Own work
  • Developing concentration when reading.
  • Recognising punctuation marks when reading.

Maths:

Various aspects of maths will be covered including:

  • Counting in 2s, 5s, 10s and 3s;
  • Fractions halves, thirds, quarters and 3-quarters
  • Doubles and halves using partitioning
  • Adding of 2-digit numbers by partitioning or counting on
  • Subtracting by finding a difference or counting back
  • 3D shapes
  • Multiplication and division as the inverse
  • Number and place value
  • Ordering of days of the week and months of the year
  • Constructing block graphs
  • Telling time to the nearest quarter of an hour and the nearest 5minutes
  • Addition and subtraction to solve 2-step money problems

Science:

This term we will be studying “Plants” and we are taking part in the ”Rocket Science” experiment.  We will investigate “Animals” whilst visiting the beach and start a new topic “Seasonal Changes”.  To include:

  • Participating in the “Rocket Science” experiment.
  • Introducing ideas about the Sun using sunny facts.
  • Identifying the movement of the Sun.
  • Exploring shadows.
  • Ordering seasons and months.
  • Recording weather.
  • Investigating migration and hibernation.
  • Discussing Sun myths.
  • Identifying sea animals and plants.

RE:

  • Thinking about belonging.
  • Learning about forgiveness.
  • Why the church is an important building for Christians?
  • Investigating Bible stories.
  • Discovering the importance of symbols and signs.

Art:

The children will undertake a variety of artwork and use different mediums.

  • Improving pencil skills.
