Primary school places for September 2019

Following the announcement of primary school places last week, it is clear that a number of schools in Cornwall are over-subscribed for September 2019, resulting in anxiety and disappointment for many families.

If you find yourself in this position, you might want to consider Roselyon School as an option.

Based in Lanlivery, between St Austell and Lostwithiel, we have a small number of places left in reception class for September 2019, and for those worried about having siblings at separate schools, we may have places available in other primary years. We organise private minibus transport to locations throughout Cornwall to alleviate the pressure of travelling if you live further afield, as well as wrap around care for working parents.

Head teacher, Hillary Mann explains: “We are lucky to not be bound by the restraint of the school application deadlines and can therefore offer parents the chance to have a look at our school and take up one of the few spaces remaining. Applications will only close once we have a full class. We pride ourselves on small classes at Roselyon and therefore encourage interested parents to get in contact as soon as possible to ensure a space is available.”

Anyone interested in the school is invited to call Mrs Mann on 01726 812110 or email her via secretary@roselyonschool.com

Roselyon School was founded in 1952 and was originally located in a mine-owner’s house on a wooded, 5 acre site in Par, but in 2018 we moved to a bigger site set in the grounds of the former Churchtown Farm, Lanlivery. Our new site has acres of open space enabling the children to take part in many outdoor activities including forest school and beach school, and we now have access to a neighbouring working farm. Our main building is fully accessible and newly refurbished.

We pride ourselves on small classes enabling teachers to support each child and help them gain their full potential. Roselyon can boast many competition wins including the 2017 UK fencing championships, classes in the Cornwall sailing regatta, cross country, art, poetry, music and more.

Open Morning Update from the Head

Ahead of our Open Morning tomorrow (23 March), read a special update from our Head, Hilary Mann:

“Since opening our new and exciting site in Lanlivery in September 2018, Roselyon School has been providing a fabulous and stimulating learning environment for our pupils inside and outside the classroom. The site has been fully operational since it opened and we have been encouraged by the increasing level of interest that we have been receiving at the School.

We are looking forward to showcasing the new opportunities the School has to offer at our Open Day tomorrow (23 March) from 10am to 12 noon, which promises to be a very positive event and will provide prospective parents and pupils with an opportunity to tour the School’s fantastic facilities, meet the Head and the teaching staff and hear about the ‘Roselyon experience’.

Looking to the future, whilst the independent school sector is facing economic challenges, the positive interest that we have received recently is allowing us to prepare for the Summer Term ahead and for the Academic year 2019/20. We are confident that we can build on the strong foundations we have put in place for what is a supportive, exciting and unique environment for educating children.”

We look forward to seeing you tomorrow!

News from the British School Fencing Championships

Congratulations to our teams for their superb performances at last weekend’s British School Fencing Championships. We are most proud! Head coach Mr. Gayle provided this update:

“Amelia, Isla and Evie were the youngest fencers competing on the day, and they attracted a fair deal of attention with their good control of distance and clever bladework.

Jake, Will and Dylan began the day with determination, but a sense they would be meeting some very experienced and skillful teams on the piste. However, it became apparent from the start that we were performing better than expected in the first round of poules. A win in the first round of DE was a seminal moment for our team. A second win in the second round of DE against St Benedict’s was also completely unexpected, leaving us both euphoric and exhaused, with a two point lead at 45-43 with seconds left on the clock.

The boys finally went out in the third DE, securing second place in our table, and 7th overall. Superb results. Superb fencing. Superb competition. Thank you British Fencing Schools!”

Come to our Open Morning on 23 March 2019

On Saturday 23 March 2019, we warmly invite you to visit Roselyon and see for yourself what our independent prep school in Cornwall is really like.

At our first Open Morning in our new home in Lanlivery, there will be a range of activities both indoors and out, so you will have the chance to see our wonderful new classrooms and fabulous outdoor learning environment – complete with adventure activity centre, woodlands, lakelands, and even our resident pigs!

There will be lots to see and do including a singing masterclass, art and drama activities, and a demonstration from our champion fencing team. We will be showing off our outdoor learning opportunities and our activity challenge course will be officially opened! The Bird Lady of Fowey will also be attending with owls and hawks, and there will even be activities for the little ones, with a special insight into our weekly toddler group.

Staff, governors, parents and pupils will all be on hand to talk to you about what life is like at our amazing school, including our unique home education options.

Roselyon is widely recognised for producing outstanding educational results and these achievements have secured our position as the only ‘Sunday Times Top 100’ prep school in Cornwall in recent years. In our latest ISI Inspection, children’s attainment was rated ‘excellent’ and we are proud to have this confirmation that our children ‘attain notably high standards of literacy and numeracy, and have outstanding attitudes towards learning.’ Much of this success can be attributed to our small class size policy.

You can also find out more about our focus on outdoor learning, with Beach School, Woodland School, the numerous opportunities to learn on the farm adjacent to the school and a very broad range of outdoor co-curricular activities.

If you are looking for a prep school in Cornwall, do come along and see us on 23 March between 1oam and 12 noon. There is plenty of free parking and our site is fully accessible. To register your interest, call us on 01726 812110 or email your details to info@roselyonschool.com

We really do look forward to seeing you!

High quality teaching for home-educated children in Cornwall

Are you looking to supplement your home education with direct high-quality teaching?

We can help with that! We offer home-educated children from Reception to Year 6 the option to attend any number of subjects taught here at our independent prep school in Cornwall, from French, Latin, Religious Studies and PHSE, through to Science, Art, Maths and English.

Roselyon is a small and friendly school, with experience in providing tailored solutions for home-educators. Our dedicated teaching staff and classroom assistants provide the maximum of time to each child. We believe strongly in praise and encouragement and ensure the children (and parents) are aware of the progress they are making.

Our fees are very competitive when compared to traditional home tutoring costs, and parents can choose to purchase as many or as few subjects as they choose. The only requirement is that subjects are purchased as a ‘half-term block’ (there are a set number of lessons a week and timetables will be discussed with you) and paid for in advance for half a term.

If you are interested, please do call us on 01726 812110 or email info@roselyonschool.com

Should you decide to proceed, you will need to provide us with a copy of the letter you have received from the Elective Home Educator’s office in Cornwall. The parent has responsibility for the provision of ‘efficient full-time education’ (Education Act 1996), and the Roselyon subjects will form part of that provision.
